All classes and workshops are held in the Burlingame Room at the Ball Visitors Center, Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, unless otherwise noted. Registration for each event is listed below.  

 

   

A Look at Perennials 鈥 Monthly Tour

September 12th
10:00am

"Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers" is a suggestion usually referring to container design but come take a walk with a garden docent to look at how perennial plants can be used to fill out the over-all garden design.

Wildflowers of the Sandhills

We are honored to welcome Bruce Sorrie, author of 鈥淲ildflowers of the Sandhills Region鈥 to speak to us about his book describing over 600 wildflowers, flowering shrubs, and vines. This user-friendly field guide is the first to focus on the rare, fragile lands and species of the Sandhills regions of the Carolinas and Georgia. It is 鈥渢he book鈥 for identifying and understanding the wild plants of our local landscape.

Ikebana Inspired Floral Arrangement

September 18th

Let鈥檚 have some fun flower arranging with Carol Dowd, AIFD, owner of 鈥淏otanicals Fabulous and Orchids鈥 in Southern Pines! We will be exploring the interesting and playful designs of Ikebana type arrangements. Please bring a favorite container, 4-6 inches in height, a branch or two and some garden foliage. Flowers will be provided.                                                                        
COST: $10 members/ $20 non-members

Welcome Autumn! 鈥 Monthly Tour

As the weather starts to cool and the daylight hours get shorter, join a garden docent on a walk through the gardens to see how these seasonal changes are affecting the plants.

How to Over Winter Tropicals

October 15th
10:00-11:00am

We are excited to welcome back Alex Wiseman from Provision Ace Garden Center for an in-depth discussion on how to over winter your tropical plants. Alex will provide examples of tropicals and different products and procedures to care for them in the winter. He will also bring a plant as a door prize to be given out to one of our lucky registrants!          
COST: Free for members/ $10 non-members

Storytelling in the Hoad Children鈥檚 Garden

October 26th
10:30-11:30am

Bring the kiddos out for a special seasonal storytelling time with 鈥淐lara the Good Witch鈥 in the Hoad Children鈥檚 Garden. Clara is an expert storyteller, from the tip of her pointed hat to her knotty toes, she loves making stories come to life!

Limit 20 children up to 10 years of age.   
Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Exploring the Colors of Fall 鈥 Monthly Tour

November 14th

Will there be color, or will the leaves have dropped and turned brown? Different trees and plants go through their vibrant Fall changes at different times throughout the season, and the timing can change year to year. Come for a walk through the gardens to see what鈥檚 still showing off and having it鈥檚 last hurrah and what鈥檚 already fallen, changing the look of the garden landscape.

Santa in the Gardens

Session #2: 2:30-4:00pm

Are you ready for the event of the season? Once again, we are having our highly anticipated day with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Gardens. We will have many fun activities like Writing Letters to Santa, Face Painting, Reindeer Food, and Story Time with Mr. & Mrs. Claus in person. The kiddos will have a chance to sit with Santa and tell him what they want for Christmas.

Succulent Christmas Tree Centerpiece

December 3rd
10:30am-12:00pm

Join Carol Lucas, owner of Carol Lucas Designs in Carthage, for a fun and festive workshop to create your own unique succulent Christmas tree arrangement. Our workshop will guide you step-by-step to create a vertical mini-succulent centerpiece for your entertaining table this season. The tree also makes for stunning DIY Christmas gifts for a family member or friend. All succulents, form, mini lights, & supplies will be provided. This live arrangement can also be used throughout the year by changing the lights to fit the occasion such as hearts, eggs, pumpkins.               
COST: $60 members/$75 non-members
